Are you sure he'll be okay staying out during the jumps? [ She wouldn't want the droid to get hurt; she rather likes him. ] He could always stay in the shuttle bay, if he'd like -- honestly, I'm not sure anywhere on the ship is safe, but especially not during the jumps. He might tell you about some disturbing things when we wake up, too -- and he may have been waiting for us for a long time.

No, that's why I'm asking you. I don't want to leave him out in the open if it's going to hurt him. But leaving him submerged in stasis fluid for however long we're in the pods could damage him too.

There was an android here for a while -- Data. He went into the pods every jump and didn't mention any negative effects... though he and Artoo are quite a bit different.

An android. [well, it's a step closer. if data is anything like threepio and the other protocol droids, them maybe artoo will be safe. but then again, maybe not.]

I'll...talk to him. [artoo, of course.] We might be able to come up with a way to keep his circuits clear.

Could it do that much damage to them?

Artoo is a well-built droid and he's designed to operate in space. But he's seen battle before, so there is a chance he could be damaged in a way that neither of us are aware of. If he goes in to one of the pods, he could be perfectly fine. Or...

[fill in the gaps there, carolyn. he has no idea how the stasis fluid could affect the droid]

What does he think about it?

[ She's trying to come up with some sort of idea, but short of "wrap the droid in a tarp and cross your fingers", she's not coming up with much. ]

Artoo?

[if it isn't clear enough by how quiet his voice seems just then (having been directed away from the device), the long sequence of beeps makes it obvious that he's checking in with the droid right now. there's a few more muttered words of his own, before he finally turns his attention back to carolyn again. sorry about that.]

He's going to enter a pod, but we may need to use the welding equipment in the shuttlebay first. [a little more beeping there. thanks for the reminder, artoo.] Please. If that's alright with you.

That's fine. I wouldn't want him to be damaged somehow, after all. Just let me know if you need anything else.

[ Pause. Then a deeeep breath, then: ]

Obi-Wan said you're the person to ask if I wanted to learn how to understand them.

[there's a moment of silence of his own there, thanks to the mention of obi-wan. but he's quick to try and overstep it in favor of focusing on carolyn's implied question.]

The only way to learn is to spend time with them. They really do like to talk, whether you understand them or not. But they'll make their points known to you somehow.

[pause. this may be a little awkward, considering just how well the two of them get along, but-]

We're heading back to the shuttle bay now. You can join us if you want.

[ Well, the best way to get over awkward is just to meet it head-on. Or. Something. ]

I'm already there, so I'll... see the both of you when you show up.

[ What is leaving the shuttle bay she has no idea. ]

We're on our way.

[and he disconnects there. though not before artoo beeps out a goodbye of his own first]
